So you've got your permit and you're getting ready for your Pennsylvania driving test. Though taking your road skills exam can sound like an intimidating task, it doesn't have to be. Preparing for your exam in advance can go a long way when it comes to passing the Pennsylvania driving test. Just follow these steps.
Step One: Get Plenty of Practice
In Pennsylvania, teen drivers are required to log at least 65 hours of practice behind the wheel before they can apply for their drivers license. While practicing, be sure to obey all traffic laws. Always drive at or under the speed limit, use your turn signals and come to a complete stop at stop signs. If you practice those behaviors, they'll come naturally during your Pennsylvania driving test.
After you've logged your practice hours and had your permit for at least six months, you're eligible to take your road skills exam.
Step Two: Plan Ahead
Once you've decided when you want to take your Pennsylvania driving test, schedule your appointment at the DMV. You can now book appointments online. When you visit the DMV, you'll need to bring:
Your valid learner's permit
A signed Parent or Guardian Consent Form
Proof of registration and insurance for your vehicle
The license of the parent or guardian who accompanied you to the appointment
It's a good idea to get all these documents together ahead of time so that you don't have added stress on exam day.
Step Three: Get to Know Your Vehicle
After a DMV employee has reviewed your paperwork, they'll complete a check to make sure your vehicle is up to safety standards. You'll need to have working lights, brakes, windshield wipers, turn signals, mirrors, doors and tires. You may be asked to demonstrate that some of those features are operable, so make sure you know how to work them.
Once a DMV employee has determined that your vehicle is safe, it's time to take your road skills exam.
Step Four: Know What to Expect
During your Pennsylvania driving test, your examiner will be tasked with determining whether you're a safe driver. They will pay special attention to the way you approach and obey traffic signs, stop lights and intersections. They will also be checking to ensure that you have control of your vehicle and drive with correct posture.
In addition to observing your safe driving skills, your examiner may also ask you to parallel park your vehicle. If your vehicle has park assist, unfortunately you can't use it during your exam.
You won't pass the Pennsylvania driving test if you:
Drive dangerously or recklessly
Ignore your examiner's instructions
Violate traffic laws
Cause a crash
Fail to use your turn signals
If you don't pass the exam on your first try, you can take it again in seven business days. If you follow the steps outlined here, however, one driving test should be all it takes. Good luck!
