The Florida driving test is the last thing that stands between you and your first license, but don't worry. There are many things you can do to prepare! If you follow this advice, passing the Florida driving test should be a breeze.

Preparing for the Florida Driving Test

If you're 16 and you've had your learner's permit for at least one year, you're eligible to take the Florida driving test. You'll want to schedule your test appointment in advance. In the days leading up to your exam, be sure to gather all the paperwork you'll need to bring with you to Florida Driver & Vehicle Services. You can use this handy tool to create a personalized document checklist. The night before your exam, make sure to get plenty of rest. Being relaxed and well rested will help you perform your best on the driving test.

If you're really nervous about taking the exam at Florida Driver & Vehicle Services, you can opt to enroll in a comprehensive driver education course taught by an instructor who is authorized to administer the driving skills test themselves.

Know What to Expect on the Exam

If you know what to expect on the Florida driving test, you'll know what to practice. Having an idea of the skills you'll be expected to demonstrate may also help calm your nerves on test day. Your test administrator will ask you to perform the following maneuvers:

  • Three-point turn
  • Straight-in parking
  • Parking on a grade
  • Stopping quickly and safely
  • Backing up in a straight line
  • Signaling and turning
  • Passing
  • Coming to a complete stop at stop signs

You'll also be expected to show that you understand Florida's right-of-way laws and traffic signs, that you can change lanes safely, and that you drive a safe distance from the car in front of you.

Get to Know Your Vehicle

If possible, spend some time in the vehicle you'll be using during the test. If you've practiced driving and operating the controls on that particular car, you'll feel more comfortable behind the wheel on exam day. Before you can take the driving test, your vehicle will undergo an inspection. You may be asked to demonstrate that the horn, headlights, brake lights, and windshield wipers are all in working order.

Always Practice Safe Driving

One of the best ways to prepare for the Florida driving test is to get plenty of experience behind the wheel. While practicing, be sure that you're not speeding or rolling through stop signs, and always use your turn signals. If you practice safe driving consistently, you're more likely to demonstrate it during the exam.

By planning ahead, familiarizing yourself with your vehicle, and practicing safe driving, you'll be well on your way to getting your license!
