How to Get Your Driving Permit in Idaho

Getting a driving permit in Idaho is a lot like getting one in any other state. They have a Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program for young drivers that involves several steps. By the time you turn 18 and get your unrestricted driver's license, you will have had a learner's permit, taken drivers ed, and received your underage driver's license as well as your unrestricted license.

The GDL program is laid out very simply, especially if you know what to expect ahead of time. The first step in the process of getting your Idaho driver's license is obtaining the Idaho Supervised Instruction Permit (SIP).

Requirements for obtaining the Idaho Instruction Permit

Getting your supervised instruction permit in Idaho is not difficult but it is the first step you must complete when going through the GDL program. You will get your SIP before you take the required drivers education course.

You must be at least 14½ before you can start the GDL program. Once you are 14½, you will apply for your permit in person at the Idaho Driver's License that is closest and most convenient to you. Before you go to the driver's license office you will need to gather the required documents. Place them in a folder so you won't forget anything important when you leave the house.

Required Documents to Bring to the Driver's License Office

• Proof of your age and identity: Your certified original birth certificate or U.S. Passport
• Proof of your Idaho residency: School enrollment papers, transcripts, or a bill that is in your name and has your current address on it
• Proof of legal residence in the U.S.
• A second document proving identity with information that correlates with your primary document. This can be a high school photo ID, or state-issued State ID.
• Social Security Card
• Your parent or guardian
• The appropriate amount of money for the fees ($15 permit fee, $6.50 administrative fee)

You do not need to pass a written exam to get your Idaho SIP. Once you're 14½, simply bring the required documentation and identification, as well as money for fees, and you're all set.

Once you receive your SIP you will move on to the next step, which is enrolling in a state-approved drivers ed course. This course can be taken through high school or you can take it from a professional driving school. Having the SIP will allow you to complete the driving portion of your drivers education course, which is a total of 6 driving hours in addition to the classroom portion and driver observation portion.
