Minnesota's graduated driver's license laws were created to help new motorists ease into their on-road responsibilities while involving parents and guardians in the educational process. Studies have shown that the number one cause of death for people between the ages of 15 and 17 is traffic accidents. According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, teen accidents can be attributed to many factors including: inattentiveness, excessive speed, failure to wear safety belts, fatigue, failure to check traffic before pulling onto a roadway, and driving with other teens. Ten percent of licensed Minnesota teen drivers are reported in crashes each year. Authorities know that driver's education courses are essential to reduce the risk of having these new drivers on the road and require young drivers to use appropriate educational tools.

Steps to obtaining a new Minnesota driver's license as a teen.

For people between the ages of 15 and 18, there are a few steps to obtaining a new Minnesota driver's license. First of all, you will need to complete a driver's education course approved by  The Minnesota Department of Public Safety. Once you complete the course, you are issued a certificate of completion. Now, you just need to pass the written and vision exams at your local DPS office. Upon successfully completing these exams, you are issued an instructional permit, which allows you to drive while being supervised by a licensed driver over 21-years-old. If you are at least 16 years old, after having held your instructional permit for 6 months and completing 30 hours of supervised driving with a licensed driver over 21, you can apply for the road test and get your driver's license.

Where Can You Take Drivers Education?

The Minnesota DPS is striving to deliver driver's education in a form that is convenient to students. Previously, students were limited to taking driver's education in high schools or conventional driving schools. But now, they can take driver's education in the comfort of their home. A DPS approved driver's education book course offered on DriversEd.com allows you to take the course on your own time and at your pace - a great advantage for those who have busy schedules and do not want to spend hours at school. The course provides students with extensive information on traffic rules and simulates on-road situations to make sure they will be able to apply this knowledge when on the road. These new educational tools, along with the inclusion of graduated license laws, are sure to make Minnesota roads safer places to drive.
