1. Developing Unsafe Driving Habits

In Nevada, you'll need to log at least 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice before you can apply for your driver's license. While practicing, be sure to always use your turn signals, drive under the speed limit, come to a complete stop at stop signs and give the car in front of you plenty of space. These are some of the behaviors that your test administrator will be checking for on exam day. By practicing safe driving habits every time you're behind the wheel, they'll start to become second nature.

2. Not Studying Nevada's Traffic Laws

Though your Nevada driving test administrator will ask you to execute specific maneuvers during your exam, they'll also be checking to make sure you understand the state's traffic laws and highway signs.

The best way to study Nevada's rules of the road is to review the Nevada Driver's Handbook. With fewer than 100 pages, it's actually quite manageable compared to other states. Pay special attention to the chapter on safe driving.

3. Forgetting Your Documents

One of the trickiest parts of getting your driver's license is assembling all the documents that you'll need to bring to the DMV. Be sure to get your paperwork together before the day of your Nevada driving test so that you have one fewer thing to worry about on exam day.

You'll need to present:

  • Your learner's permit
  • Proof that you completed a driver's education course
  • Your log of parent-supervised driving hours
  • Proof of your identity and Nevada residence
  • A Certificate of Attendance from your high school
  • The registration and proof of insurance for your vehicle

4. Not Preparing for the Road Skills Exam

Your test administrator will likely as you to merge into traffic, change lanes, make a turn, parallel park, back up in a straight line, stop quickly and stop on a grade. Be sure to practice those maneuvers before your exam.

In addition, your test administrator will need to make sure that your vehicle is in working order. They may ask you to demonstrate that your headlights, turn signals, horn and windshield wipers are working, so make sure that you know how to use them.

5. Not Staying Calm

Though taking your Nevada driving test can be a nerve wracking experience, don't forget that you've been practicing for this day for six months or longer!

Your test administrator wants you to pass, so do your best to stay calm and show off your safe driving skills. Good luck!
