License plates are used for identification purposes and all U.S. states require vehicles to have some kind of license plate while driving on public roads. Minnesota legislation requires most passenger vehicles to display two license plates, one at the front end of the vehicle and another at the rear. Cars that do not have a specialized bracket at the front end, motorcycles, and trailers are only required to carry one license plate at the rear end of the vehicle.

Standard license plates are issued when a vehicle is registered for the first time. License plates are issued to vehicles, not individuals. Therefore, they are transferred when the vehicle is sold. If you purchase the vehicle from an authorized Minnesota dealer, the dealer usually takes care of the paperwork. However, if you are buying a vehicle from a private party, you will be required to submit a transfer application to the Department of Public Safety, Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) division.

Minnesota license plates for passenger automobiles are valid for seven years from the date of issue. After that period, you will be required to visit a DVS office and file an application for plate renewal. You must note that the registration tabs displayed on the license plate must be renewed every year. You can either renew the registration tab online or mail your renewal form and payment to Driver and Vehicle Services Renewal, PO Box 64587, St. Paul, MN, 55164-0587. You can also visit any DVS office and renew your registration in person.

If your plates are damaged, stolen, mutilated, or lost; you are required to obtain a new set of plates. For plate replacement, please visit your nearest DPS office. You will be required to pay a service fee of $8.50 and a replacement fee of $14.00 for double plates and $10.00 for a single plate.
