If you are moving to Minnesota from another state and you plan to drive, be aware that you must obtain a license in the North Star State. The requirements are different depending on the type of license you need. If you are a regular, non-commercial driver, you have 60 days after becoming a resident in Minnesota to contact Driver and Vehicle Services and obtain your new license or permit. If you have a valid commercial drivers license from another state, you have 30 days to obtain your Minnesota license after moving to your new residence.
If you have a valid license from another U.S. state, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Virgin Islands, Guam, or Canada, you need to take a knowledge and vision test in order to receive your new Minnesota license. You do not need to take a skills road test unless your license has been expired for more than one year. At the time of application you must surrender your current, valid drivers license (it will be invalidated and returned to you).
If your current license was issued in a country other that the U.S. or Canada, you must take all three tests (knowledge, vision, road skills) in order to receive your new license.
