How to Get a Colorado Driver's Permit

Steps to getting your Colorado Driver's Permit

The first step to getting on the road is getting your Colorado driver's permit. This will allow you to practice driving so that, when the time comes, you're ready to pass a road skills exam on the way to earning your first driver's license. To get a Colorado driver's permit, follow these steps.

Step One: Complete the Required Educational Component

Depending on your age, you may be required to complete a formal driver's education course before you can apply for a permit. Here is a breakdown of the age requirements when it comes to getting a Colorado driver's permit:

  • If you're 15 to 15½ years old, you must complete a 30-hour driver's education course before you can apply for a Colorado driver's permit. A list of approved schools is available online.
  • If you're between 15½ and 16 years old, you must complete either a 30-hour driver's education course or a 4-hour driver awareness class before applying.
  • If you're 16 or older, no formal education is required.

Step Two: Assemble Your Documents

Though this may sound simple enough, for many teens it actually proves to be the most challenging part of getting your Colorado driver's permit. When you head to your local DMV, you'll need to bring:

  • Documents to verify your legal name, identity, date of birth, and lawful presence in the United States. A full list of acceptable documents is provided by the Colorado Department of Revenue.
  • Proof of your social security number, typically in the form of a social security card.
  • Two documents verifying your physical address, which can include school report cards, bank statements, or first-class mail.
  • The $16.80 application fee.
  • A parent or legal guardian to sign an Affidavit of Liability and Guardianship.

Step Three: Pass a Written Exam

Once you've met the educational requirements and gotten all your paperwork together, it's time to head to the DMV to officially apply for your Colorado learner's permit. While you're there, you'll be required to take a written exam. The exam is based on the state driving manual so be sure to study before your test, and consider enrolling in an online driver's education program for additional exam practice.

Step Four: Hit the Road

Once you've got your Colorado driver's permit, be sure to get as much practice as you can. When applying for a minor license, which allows you to drive on your own, you'll need to submit log sheets showing that you have at least 50 hours of experience behind the wheel.
