Taking a driver education course is a requirement for teens to obtain their learner's permit if they are under the age of 16. Some public schools offer driver education courses and third-party drivers education courses are also available outside of the school system. But for Oklahoma teens who don't attend a public school and/or don't live near any commercial driver education schools, a parent-taught driver education course is an option.
Oklahoma's parent-taught drivers ed course is an online curriculum led by a parent, who walks their teen through the lessons. Parent-taught courses are recognized by Service Oklahoma and will meet the qualifications to apply for a learner's permit, just as a traditional drivers ed course will.
The first step is to find a course from an approved parent-taught provider. Once you've identified a course you'd like to use, download the Parent-Taught Drivers Education Affidavit, located at the bottom of the Parent-Taught Drivers Education Packet, and mail it to the address shown on the form. Once accepted, Service Oklahoma will mail you a copy. Once you have the form in hand, purchase your selected course and start the training with your teen.
The rest of the qualifications are the same as a regular drivers ed course: the teen must be at least 15 ½ years old to be eligible to start the classroom portion of the course, which consists of 30 hours of classroom training.
Once you've worked through the full training, the provider will issue a completion certificate as verification for driver education. Your teen will need to bring this certificate to the DMV, along with other required materials, to apply for a learner's permit. If you're considering an alternative to drivers ed in a conventional classroom, just remember that Oklahoma parent-taught drivers ed is always an option.
