1. Take a DPS-approved drivers education course (under 15)

Under 15:

In Mississippi, if you want to get your learners permit at age 14 you must be enrolled in a DPS-approved Mississippi drivers education course at your school. Online courses do not satisfy this requirement.

15 or Older:

Drivers education is not mandatory if you are 15 or older in Mississippi. However, it’s always a good idea for new drivers to take a Mississippi drivers education course. With quality drivers education, you can:

2. Study for the Mississippi learners permit

In order to get the learners permit and eventually the Mississippi drivers license, everyone regardless of age must pass a written test on traffic laws and signs. Most people fail this test on their first try.

3. Apply for the Mississippi learners permit

Apply for the learners permit at a DPS office near you.
In order to be eligible for the learners permit, you must:

Be at least 15 years old OR 14 years old with proof of enrollment of driver education course.
Pay the applicable fee to the Department of Public Safety.
Show a valid Social Security card or printout from the Social Security Administration.
Present a certified copy of your birth certificate.
Submit a completed application with notarized signatures of both parents or guardians. If parents are divorced, parent with custody must sign.
If under 18 years of age, you must show proof that you are in school by presenting a signed Certification Of School Attendance form obtained from the school that you are attending. (Note: This form is not valid if over 30 days old.)
Pass a vision screening.
Pass a written knowledge test.

Once you pass the written test you will be issued a learners permit which allows you to drive only under supervision of a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old and occupying the seat beside you. Your learners permit will expire in 1 year.

4. Practice driving under supervision

Practice driving under supervision. If you are under 18, you must hold your learners permit for at least 6 months.

5. Take the driving test for the Mississippi drivers license

Schedule a driving test at your local DPS office.

In order to be eligible for the Mississippi drivers license, you must:

Be at least 15½ years old.
Have held your learners permit for at least 6 months (if under 18).
Present the same documents you did for the learners permit.
Pay the applicable fee.
Pass the driving test.

Once you pass the driving test, if you are 17 or older, you will be issued a regular drivers license. If you are under 17, you will be issued an intermediate license with the following restrictions:

An intermediate license allows unsupervised driving from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. At all other times, the intermediate licensee must be supervised by a parent, guardian or other person age twenty-one (21) years or older who holds a valid driver's license under this article and who is actually occupying the seat beside the driver.
Once you turn 16 and have held your intermediate license for at least 6 months with a clear record, you can apply for the regular drivers license.
