What To Do in a Car Accident
- Stay calm.
- Stop your car. Do not run away from the scene of an accident.
- If it is safe to do so, move your vehicle to the side of the road, out of traffic. If your vehicle cannot be driven, turn on your hazard lights or use cones, warning triangles or flares.
- Call 911, no matter how minor the accident. The police will fill out an accident report.

• Addresses
• Phone numbers
• Names of insurance companies
• Insurance information
• Drivers license numbers
• Car license plate numbers.
- Do not admit guilt. Do not sign anything assigning fault or promise to pay for damage.
- Obtain the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of passengers and witnesses.
- Jot down specific details about the scene of the accident and take pictures of the damage.
- If anyone is hurt, do not try to move an injured person—you may aggravate the injuries!
- As soon as possible after the accident, report the accident to your broker, agent, or insurance company.
